At least some, apparently modify or over write the fuel map and at least some, are vehicle and engine specific where you have to order the device and it is programmed for your vehicle. They plug into the port and you leave them there after an initialization time. There actually ARE performance chips for OBD II and quite a few out there. It indeed is a type of single chip micro processor and programmed for a specific vehicle and engine according to at least a few reviews. Here's a couple inks and pictures of the innards of two of these devices. Looks like a lot of sifting would be required to separate the grain from the chaff.īut there are tuning chips for plug and play insertion into the OBD 2 port on newer vehicles.
